Title: Fever (Book Two of the Chemical Garden Trilogy)
Author: Lauren DeStefano
Page Number: 341
Synopsis: Running away brings Rhine and Gabriel right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago - surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.
The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion…by any means necessary.
In the sequel to Lauren DeStefano’s harrowing Wither, Rhine must decide if freedom is worth the price - now that she has more to lose than ever.
My Review: Though the second was little more fast paced than the first, I enjoyed the first one more.
I liked the new characters that were introduced. My favorite being Maddie. And a new setting from the mansion was like a breathe of fresh air.
I really liked that Rhine was learning to love Gabriel in the way she couldn’t with Linden.
Overall, this was a really good book.
I thought, the ending really slowed the book down for me though. Even if it did leave off on a huge cliffhanger. It will be interesting to see all the characters come together in the last one and seem how the whole trilogy ends. It’d be a little odd to have this huge fast paced, twist turning 3rd book while having the first two be simple and just there.
My Rating: ★★★★- Really liked it!
Title: Wither (Book One)
Author: Lauren DeStefano
Page Number: 358
Synopsis: Obviously, something went terribly wrong. Genetic mutations have festered, reducing human longevity to twenty-five, even less for most women. To prevent extinction, young girls are kidnapped, mated in polygamous marriages with men eager to procreate. Sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery, a recent victim of this breeding farm mentality, has vowed to break loose from its fetters; but finding allies and a safe way out is a challenge she can only hope she will survive.
My Review: I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about this book, and at the time I had never fully read the synopsis or what it was about but I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to read it. Especially since it was another dystopian. And don’t get me wrong I love dystopian but it’s becoming a little stretched. Nevertheless, I was at Books-A-Million in the discount section and saw it for only SIX DOLLARS, so I said “what the heck” and bought it. And right from the start, I was so intrigued and taken aback, all doubt about this book was gone.
From the beginning you are pushed into this chaotic world DeStefano has created and there are so many things you want to know that you can’t help but keep reading, keep taking it all in.
I loved everything about this book. The characters. The setting. The dashes of romance and danger. The emotional roller coaster that you ride. It’s all incredible.
Now that’s not to say that every geological fact is correct in the book (when you read you will know) but, I always look past the small things if I’m enjoying the book as a whole and to me this was a small thing. A lot of reviews were complaining about it but I don’t think it should be taken too seriously, afterall it is a FICTIONAL book.
Over all I loved and adored this book and CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT wait for the second book in the series!
My Review: ★★★★★ -FAVORITE ♥
